Our Tutors
We recognize that a student's success is often based largely on the success of the student/tutor relationship; we make every effort to match students with tutors we believe will suit their individual needs.
We initially look at academic needs. Where is the student most in need of help and which tutor has achieved mastery in this area? We also take into consideration inter-personal styles. Some students need an out-going, highly energized and extroverted tutor; some students prefer to work in a lower-key environment with a laid-back, albeit highly competent tutor. We try to create the perfect match to meet the student's needs. A good match will result in a positive alliance that will greatly enhance the quality of the experience as well as the final outcomes and test results.

Geofre
| Hometown | Cooperstown, NY |
|---|---|
| Education | School: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Major: Political Geography Status: Graduated MA School: Williams College Major: Anthropology Major: History Status: Graduated BA |
| Academic Experience | Leaving grad school right as the Great Recession hit was not the best career move Geof ever made. As yet unsuccessful in his attempts to compete with ex-military specialists and foreign language experts when it comes to securing quality national security jobs, Geof has decided to shift gears and pursue his passions for helping others and strategically dismantling standardized tests. As the old saying goes, if you can't do - teach. Leveraging his two years of experience spent in the trenches as a teaching assistant at a major university, Geof continually searches for new and improved ways to teach students the concepts necessary for them to succeed in school and standardized testing situations. |
| Hobbies and Interests | Strategy board games, trivia, and other tests of mental fortitude. |
| Subjects I Teach | College Admissions: ACT, PLAN, PSAT, SAT - HS Subjects: Algebra 1, Geometry, History, Latin - General: College Essay, Study Skills - AP Exams: European History, Human Geography, U.S. Government & Politics, U.S. History, World History - Graduate Admissions: GRE General Test - SAT Subject Tests: U.S. History, World History |
| Advice to Students | The SAT is a predictable series of puzzles that can be defeated in a predictable manner. The SAT is a mystery only to those who have not prepared for it. Successful preparation comes from repetition and metacognition. Repetition of questions is necessary to develop a fundamental familiarity with the test that will increase accuracy and decrease stress. Metacognition is necessary for understanding how questions can always be broken down into simple concepts - even the most challenging math problem must ultimately rely upon arithmetical skills learned in elementary school. |

| Advice to Students | Chip away at the vocab lists little by little. Learn 5 new words every day instead of 35 new words in one day. Really focus on learning the roots of words because the sooner you master them, the sooner you will see promising results on your verbal score! |
Joe

Jon
| Hometown | Atlanta, GA |
|---|---|
| Education | School: Oglethorpe University Major: Bachelors of Science Economics Status: Graduated in 2007 School: Bronx H.S. of Science (NYC) |
| Academic Experience | After graduating from one of the nation's most prestigous competitive admission public high schools (Bronx Science in NYC), Jon decided to head south five years ago to attend Oglethorpe University. If he could change one thing academically, he would have preferred to get one or two more questions right on his Math SAT in high school. This would have scored him an 800 instead of a 770. The warmer weather, impressive golf courses, and Atlanta community made staying in Atlanta an easy choice after graduating. While at Oglethorpe, Jon welcomed the challenge of balancing a liberal arts education with a demanding golf schedule. Fortunately, he received college credit for numerous AP classes he took in high school: AP Statistics, AP Calculus BC, AP Physics, AP U.S. History, AP World History, AP Latin Vergil, AP Latin Ovid and Catullus, AP U.S. Government and Politics. Jon has fond memories of college and believes many of his experiences at Oglethorpe helped prepare him to succeed professionally. |
| Hobbies and Interests | When Jon is not tutoring, he works for a national commercial real estate brokerage firm where his schedule is flexible. Beyond the office, Jon enjoys watching movies, reading, traveling, and going to church. |
| Subjects I Teach | College Admissions: ACT, PSAT, SAT - HS Subjects: Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Calculus, Economics, Geometry, Latin, PreCalculus, Statistics - AP Exams: Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Latin Literature, Latin: Vergil, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Statistics, U.S. History, World History - SAT Subject Tests: Latin, Mathematics Level 1, Mathematics Level 2 - HS Admissions: SSAT Lower Level, SSAT Upper Level - General: Study Skills |
| Advice to Students | The SAT is a test written by ordinary people; the answer to each question is there along with four wrong answers; if you work hard to learn our techniques, it's really that simple. |

| Academic Experience | Laura graduated summa cum laude from Duke in May 2008, but she is still in denial of her alumna status because she loved it so much. At Duke, she majored in Art History and French while juggling classes from a wide array of fields. She was certainly the only Art History major in Advanced Accounting, for example! One of her favorite experiences was working for three years as an Undergraduate Writing Tutor, which led her to present her research on online tutoring to a conference of writing center professionals. Laura is now enjoying graduate school in New York City at NYU's Institute of Fine Arts. She plans to pursue a career in art museums after completing her Ph.D. in Art History. |
| Hobbies and Interests | Laura spends a lot of time in museums - for pleasure, classes, and internships. One of her surefire stress-relievers is baking, and her favorite dessert is a rich Paula Deen brownie recipe. Who knows, maybe she'll share some with you! Matt
| Hometown | Duluth, GA |
|---|---|
| Education | School: Georgia Institute of Technology Major: International Affairs |
| Academic Experience | Matt is majoring in International Affairs at Georgia Tech. This means he's reading a bunch of books about politics instead of studying calculus like all the other kids. He is aiming for Law School after he graduates. He never had lessons or private tutoring before taking the SAT, but now, after seeing what Appelrouth can do, wishes he had, so that he could have perfected his score. Matt has tutored privately since he was in middle school, for the SAT and other school subjects. In his free time, Matt likes to rock on his drums, draw, and play basketball. |
| Subjects I Teach | College Admissions: ACT, PSAT, SAT - HS Subjects: Algebra 1, Algebra 2, English, Geometry, Trigonometry - SAT Subject Tests: Mathematics Level 1, Mathematics Level 2 |
| Advice to Students | Practice tests are your best friend. Also, when planning out your study schedule, make sure you leave the day before the test completely empty so that you can just relax and mellow out. You DON'T want to be cramming right up until the last minute. |
Mir
| Hometown | Atlanta, GA |
|---|---|
| Education | School: Georgia Institute of Technology Status: 3rd Year Undergraduate Major: Industrial and Systems Engineering |
| Academic Experience | Mir is currently studying Industrial Engineering at Georgia Tech. Having completed all core classes, he is really beginning to enjoy Optimization, Stochastics and Process Simulation classes. He plans on pursuing a Master of Business Administration after his years as an undergrad at Tech so that he can someday be a Technical Director in a corporation. Mir has been tutoring for the SAT for years and was also a 10th grade physics instructor at a private British high school. He is actively involved in the Bangladeshi Student Association at Tech and W.R.E.K Radio, and, in his free time, Mir enjoys spending time with his wife and his two cats, Porkchop and Poundcake. He enjoys figuring out how things work; his life is a real life discovery channel show. If there is anything to know about anything, Mir wants to know it. Recently, he worked as an Industrial Engineering Co-op at Delta Airlines, which helped fuel his passion for traveling. He also enjoys photography and exploring Atlanta. |

Natalie

|---|---|
| Education | School: Yale Law School Status: Juris Doctorate School: Emory University Status: Bachelor of Arts Major: Mathematics/Economics Minor: Religion |
| Academic Experience | Natalie started on several majors at Emory (including Spanish, English, and Religion) before finally settling on Math and Economics. She spent three years helping ATS students prepare for their college entrance exams before she left Atlanta to attend Yale Law School. She graduated in May and has decided to return to her first love: teaching. |
| Hobbies and Interests | In her spare time, Natalie enjoys cooking, practicing yoga, running, and singing off-pitch to country music. She is an avid reader and puzzle-solver, and she often has her nose in sudoku or Spanish-language books. |
| Subjects I Teach | College Admissions: ACT, PLAN, PSAT, SAT - HS Subjects: Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Analysis, Calculus, Economics, English, Geometry, Physics, PreCalculus, Spanish, Statistics, Trigonometry, Writing - AP Exams: Calculus AB, Calculus BC, English Language, English Literature, Spanish Language - General: College Essay, Study Skills - Graduate Admissions: GMAT, GRE General Test, LSAT - SAT Subject Tests: Literature, Mathematics Level 1, Mathematics Level 2, Physics, Spanish - HS Admissions: SSAT Lower Level, SSAT Upper Level |
| Advice to Students | Don't worry about solving the math problems the "right" way. There are no style bonuses on the test, and no one cares how you go about selecting the right answer. Plug and chug works fine! Besides, most of us think better in concrete terms (2's and 3's) than in abstractions (x's and y's). |
Patrick
| Hometown | Alpharetta, GA |
|---|---|
| Education | School: Georgia Institute of Technology Status: Sophomore Major: Biomedical Engineering |
| Academic Experience | Patrick is currently studying as a Biomedical Engineer with a minor in Spanish and plans on attending medical school after graduating. When he's not trying to get done with a somewhat insane amount of schoolwork, you might find him playing water polo, reading a good book, or just throwing a football or Frisbee with friends. He loves exploring other countries (especially Spanish-speaking ones), going to as many concerts as possible, and scuba diving wherever and whenever the opportunity arises. |
| Subjects I Teach | College Admissions: ACT, PSAT, SAT - HS Subjects: Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Chemistry, English, Trigonometry - AP Exams: Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Chemistry, English Language, English Literature - SAT Subject Tests: Chemistry - General: Study Skills |
| Advice to Students | As hard as it is, try not to worry. The only time that stressing about any test is ok is when you haven't studied and know you need to. When you go to take the SAT, realize that you've prepared as well as you can and leave it at that. Worry won't make you a better test taker, but it might distract you, cause self doubt, or keep you up way too late the night before. Instead, relax, do your best, and don't let yourself over think the entire process. |

In her spare time, Savanna is building her own photography business and pursuing her passion for painting. Stephen
| Hometown | Charleston, SC |
|---|---|
| Education | School: Emory University Status: Third-Year Student (Junior) Major: Math/Computer Science |

A diehard fan of classic and alternative rock, bluegrass, and classical music, Stephen is an enormous animal lover, having left behind two dogs and a pony in coming to Atlanta.
